Same wine in different bottle - iPad vs iPhone

In a shocking revelation, Charlie Miller has reported that the iPad is crippled with the same memory addressing security vulnerability as the iPhone. It is said that a vital security feature known as “Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR)” is missing in the operating software installed on this device. Apple products are known to use Data Execution Prevention or DEP to prevent malicious code from executing commands that can alter the system files or the operating software. ASLR is is used to allow only random memory addressing to store commands in different memory locations. Hence, the lack of ASLR feature weakens the defenses of DEP by allowing easy access to hackers, letting them run malicious scripts on existing commands within applications. Thus, it opens up new insecure portals for remote access, making the device vulnerable to external attacks.

Aaron Portnoy, a researcher at the security vulnerability tracking firm Tipping Point, has said, “It's inevitable that someone will do it in the very near future. But there's not a huge push to hack it. In terms of exploitation, it's just not that different from the iPhone."

It is a known fact that Apple holds a very small market share mainly limited to the US region. So, it is unlikely that there would be a mass scale attack on Apple's products. Although, one cannot deny the fact that a seasoned hacker could exploit any vulnerability in the software to steal critical information or data.

Aaron Portney says that it is not possible to actually compromise the iPad with a slew of attacks, using Weinmann and Lazzo's exploits in the current scenario. He adds that the software might just need “some tweaking” for better security. “The build of Safari is slightly different," he says. "You'd just have to port it to a different version of the software, which would take some debugging."

EVO will be the first 4G handset to hit the market

The 4G battle is brewing in the U.S. and while there are currently two competing technologies including WiMAX and LTE being used, most only expect LTE to survive the battle. Everyone but Sprint and Clearwire are backing LTE and Clearwire has cleared the way to move to LTE if it desires.

Despite the murky outlook for WiMAX, there are several markets around the country where WiMAX from Sprint and Clearwire is in use. One of the things missing from these areas so far has been a mobile phone that could operate on the 4G network. So far, only modems for computers have been offered.

A screenshot has leaked from The Shack (formerly Radio Shack) that shows that pre-orders for the HTC EVO will start later this month. That is not a firm date, but the screenshot seems real enough and the time frame meets with rumors that have been circulating about the device. The screen shot reportedly came from the internal employee computer system at The Shack.

The image also lists some of the specs we already knew about the EVO. The device will run the Android 2.1 OS, use a 4.3-inch TFT LCD screen with a resolution of 480x800 and uses a 1GHz Snapdragon processor. The handset also has 512MB of RAM, an 8-megapixel camera, and a 1.3-megapixel front facing camera for video conferencing. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, mobile HDTV, and HDMI output will be featured along with a microSD card slot for storage.

Phandroid reports that tipsters have claimed that training on the EVO will start on May 24 and the handset has a June 6 launch date. Pricing is still unknown, but one of the many rumors pegs the device at $199.99.

Hack to make free STD Calls

STD call rates are reducing in India every day, but still, they are not free. Today we bring you a hack to make free STD calls. We are exploiting a loophole in Rediff’s ad service. You can search for an ad on Rediff local ads and call the advertiser through Rediff. Rediff will call you first and then connect you with the advertiser of that ad. In this hack you basically need to post one ad, with your phone number. After that, every time you have to call a friend, you can search for that ad and pretend to be your friend. you want to call. Rediff will thus, call you as the advertiser and it will call your friend whose number you provided. Confused? Let us explain it step by step.
.
1) Go to http://localads.rediff.com
.
2) Click on Post ad (free) button.
.
3) Fill out the form and enter your Mobile number. Here, you should advertise something which is easier to search.
.
4) Post your ad and and wait for some time. Usually it takes around 40-45 minutes at max.
.
5) Search your ad and provide your friend’s number as the number to be connected with advertiser of that ad (you).
.
That is it. You made a free STD call. The catch is that one call lasts for only 1:30 minutes. Additionally, there is a limit of calls made per ad per week. However, they let you post multiple ads with same mobile number. That is you can do away with this weekly limit easily.

Hack your friends mobile

So you want to do any of the following?

  • .log into your friends mobile
  • read his messages
  • change his phone settings- read his messages
  • change profile
  • play his ringtone even if phone is on silent
  • play his songs(in his phone)
  • restart the phone
  • switch off the phone
  • restore factory settings
  • change ringing volume
  • call from his phone

Ok so how the hell to do this Ok for starters this is no hack. It uses bluetooth's existing functionality to access the features being talked about.
.
Prerequisites:
.
  • The other phone must be bluetooth enabled(most are these days)
  • The other phone must have bluetooth on(Surprisingly a lot of people always have it on, in spite of the fact that you should never have it on, it eats you battery. How many people, a BBC panaroma program some time back used this to find out that more than 60% of people have left bluetooth on.
  • Unless the other person configured it that way, you do require permission to pair once. So you need to be paired with the other phone once to use this hack next time without anyone's knowing. (Thats why its hack your friends mobile, your friend might have paired you already .

7 Tips for reworking your mobile phones after being dropped in water

People cannot imagine a day without their mobile phones nowadays with phones occupying a very significant place in our lives. Mobile phones are prone to damage due to their rampant usage as also many times we have observed that there is whole lot of mayhem when it is dropped in the water. Well here are the 7 useful tips for bringing your mobile phone back to normalcy after it has been dropped into the water.
  1. The first step you need to take is the immediate shutting off your mobile once it is recovered, although in most cases you will not have to do that as they itself get off automatically. Patience pays off - do not dare to experiment anything new and test the phone whether it is working or not until the phone is absolutely dry which takes around 2-4 days generally.

  2. Then you need to remove all its vital parts that include a battery, phone covers, faceplates, SIM card and others.

  3. The next big step includes the removal of salt as soon as possible which will demand a bottle filled of distilled water. You actually need to re-submerge the phone to make sure that the metals in your phone are immune from the rust problem. I say it again as you do not dare to check whether the phone is in the working condition or not.

  4. Then pleasingly soak all the parts of the phone with distilled water except for the SIM card and battery as also the LCD screens.

  5. Take help of the direct sunlight as you need to keep the device to air dry for 2-3 days under direct sunlight. Do not in any case, attempt to experiment and use a hair dryer for providing immediate heat to fasten the process.

  6. For those who are in a big hurry, use a electronics cleaner as also rubbing alcohol in place of distilled water.

  7. Last but not the least, you will observe a miracle after 2-4 days of air drying the device as you need to plug it into the charger or battery and then test the device. Hopefully your patience will pay off!!! Believe me, the method is a tested one.

How to restore iPod

  1. Ensure that you have an active Internet connection as new versions of iTunes and iPod Software may need to be downloaded to your computer.

  2. Download and install the latest version of iTunes if you do not already have it installed.

  3. Open iTunes, and then connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod.

  4. After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.

  5. Select your iPod in the Source panel and you will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes windows.

  6. Click the Restore button. You will be prompted with one or more restore options that may prompt iTunes to automatically download the latest iPod Software. The 4 possible restore options are:
    • Restore Option 1: Restore - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod.
    • Restore Option 2: Use Same Version - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod even though a newer version is available.
    • Restore Option 3: Use Newest Version - Restores with the latest iPod Software available.
    • Restore Option 4: Restore and Update - Restores with the latest iPod Software available.

  7. If you are using a Mac, a message will appear prompting you to enter an administrator’s name and password.

  8. A progress bar will appear on the computer screen indicating that the first stage of the restore process has started. When this stage is completed, iTunes will present one of two messages on screen with instructions specific to the iPod model you are restoring.
    • Restore Instruction 1: Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).
    • Restore Instruction 2: Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).

  9. During the stage 2 of the restore process, the iPod will show an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remains connected to the computer or iPod Power adapter during this stage. Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see since the backlight on the iPod display may be off.

  10. After stage 2 of the restore process is complete and the iPod is connected to the computer, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear asking you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences similar to when you connected your iPod for the first time.

Mobile Phone Safety

  1. Use your phone's security lock code, if it has one.
  2. Disable bluetooth, if not in use.
  3. Always use a mobile hanging ribbon/thread/strip for safety.
  4. Install Anti-virus Software.
  5. Record details of your electronic serial number (ESN) of your CDMA phone.
  6. Consider separate Insurance.
  7. GSM Phones have a unique IMEI number. Key in *#06# to find yours, record it, and keep it safe.
  8. Properly mark your phone with your postcode and House No. to help police identify stolen ones.
  9. Enable the PIN Code on the handset.
  10. Only unlock the phone when you need to use it.
  11. Never buy a phone unless you know the seller is the owner, can they produce the original packaging or a receipt?
  12. Don’t give your mobile phone to strangers on the pretext of emergency situation. They may slip away with your mobile handset.
  13. Report a lost or stolen phone to the police immediately and insist for an acknowledgment.
  14. Inform your Service Provider if your phone is stolen or lost.
  15. Keep your phone out of sight in your pocket or handbag when not in use. Don’t attract attention to your phone when you are carrying or using it in the street.
  16. Avoid exposing cell phones to extreme temperatures. Heat can damage the battery and the electronics of a cell phone. Thus, leaving a phone sitting in a hot car is inadvisable. Cold can cause damage to them as well, particularly temporary loss of the screen display.
  17. Avoid exposure to dampness. Moisture causes corrosion of the internal parts of a cell phone. To avoid this, hands should be dry when handling the cell phone and a protective case can be a good preventative measure as well. It's not uncommon for cell phone repair techs to work on phones that have been dropped into sinks, toilets, swimming pools, and so forth. Leaving the cell phone in a safer, dry environment is wise but keeping it attached with a belt clip or "leash" is another method of preventing accidents when the phone must accompany the user into a "moisture rich" environment.
  18. Keep the cell phone secured. Dropping a cell phone is obviously not healthy for it. Again, clips, "leashes" etc. can be a good precaution.
  19. Avoid scratches and other surface damage by using a case or "skin" for protection. Throwing an uncovered cell phone into a purse or pocket with an array of sharp objects contained in it or other substances that might leak on to it is risky.
  20. Charge your battery appropriately. The battery is often what most limits the life of a cell phone. Manufacturer guidelines clearly outline exactly how and when a battery should be charged to assure it reaches its maximum life expectancy.
  21. Keep the cell phone clean. This is more about the cell phone user's health than the phone's well being. Think about it, a person's hands have more bacteria and micro-organisms clinging to them than any other part of the body.

Make Free International Calls from PC to Phone with Google Talk and Talkster (GTalk-to-VoIP)

Free international calling service is hard to come by, after all, commercial telephone companies or phone communication operators need to pay connection fee to receiving called party’s providers no matter the calls are made to land line, cell phone or satellite phone, and regardless of it’s a trunk, toll or VoIP calls. Lots of sites that offer free worldwide phone calls has now defunct, e.g. AllFreeCalls. Most established PC-to-Phone or VoIP operators such as MediaRing gives free calls to limited countries or destinations as promotion to attract users.
.
There is another opportunity for free international phone calls in from PC to phone style, by using Google Talk, and Talkster integration with GTalk2VoIP. The partnership, using ad-supported business model, allows callers from anywhere worldwide in every countries free international, long distance and group conference calls by leveraging on Google Talk. And callers able to call to more than 30 countries supported by Talkster’s network completely free, or partially free (caller portion) for anywhere else in the world.
.
The free international calls by dialing from GTalk instant messaging client is especially beneficial to areas with strictly regulated VoIP and telecom practices, such as India, Africa and Middle East countries such as United Arab Emirates, where using Talkster through GTalk2VoIP will let people communicate freely between mobile phones, landlines and PCs, even in countries not currently supported through Talkster’s ad supported free calling service.
.
To take advantage of free international calling via Google Talk via Talkster, follow these steps:
.
1. Run Google Talk desktop client. Download and install Google Talk if you haven’t.
2. Click on the Add button on Google Talk to add contacts into Google Talk, as the same usual way.
3. Type in the phone number of the person you want to call in the following format:
.
Complete-Full-Phone-Number@talkster.gtalk2voip.com
.
The complete full phone number must include country code and area code. For example, a telephone number in UK will have the following phone number assigned in GTalk: 442071234567@talkster.gtalk2voip.com, or for USA, 12125551212@talkster.gtalk2voip.com.
.

.
4. A confirmation instant message will be sent by Talkster for instructions together with a local Talkster call-in number on how to place the free international calls for both calling party and called party. Typically, Talkster assigns a local Talkster number for calling party (the person you want to call) in their country, which allows he or she to incur only cheap local call charge (which may be free in some countries).
.

5. To place the free international call to your friend, click on friend’s number in the Google Talk Contact List.
.
6. Click on the Call button to start the call.
.
7. Talkster will dial out to the calling phone number from Google Talk.
.

Bluetooth 3.0 Launches April 21

The short-range wireless standard Bluetooth 3.0 will officially launch on April 21. The Bluetooth 3.0 standard is expected to deliver faster short-range wireless speeds up to 480 Mb per second.
.
Bluetooth 3.0 will feature considerably increased speeds, allowing for the transfer of large video files, music collections and photo libraries wirelessly within seconds. With the addition of EPC (Enhanced Power Control) we can see improvements to reduce the number of device disconnects when syncing.
.
With the new 3.0 standards, the addition of Generic Alternate MAC/PHY (AMP) technology will allow Bluetooth 3.0 devices to transfer data at speeds compatible with Wi-Fi. The 802.11 Protocol Adaption Layer (PAL) will enable the Generic AMP feature to be used with an 802.11 radio.
.
With the 3.0 standard, Bluetooth is used to create the pairing between two devices and data transfer is handled by Wi-Fi. To take advantage of the higher transfer speeds, both devices need Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. If Wi-Fi is not present on one of the devices, data transfer falls back to Bluetooth.
.
At the moment there are no details about Bluetooth 3.0-ready devices, however more details will be available, including a list of chip makers that are lined up to support the new spec, on April 21.

Tata Indicom Telephone Directory

Tata Indicom is a CDMA operator in India with a base of more than ten million customer till the mid of 2006. The official name is tata teleservices and operates in more than 20 circles in India.Tata is the direct competitor with Reliance communications in India.

What surprises me is that Tata doesnt have any telephone directory service for its customers. If you are providing landlines to customers and competing with BSNL, MTNL and Reliance shouldnt they provide such a basic service ?

I searched in almost all search engines and couldnt find out anything. So I thought of visiting their website . Site has lot of information about their products and services. I couldnt find any link which takes me to any sort of telephone directory.

Their site has "internal site search" feature. So I thought of searching for "Directory" word in their site search and guess what I found out ?

I found out that they are using SiteSearchASP.net services for their internal site search. But the bigger surprise is that they are running out of the licence to run this service. So if you try to search anything you will get this message (image above). I wonder if they know about this or not.

But anyways, I strongly believe that they should provide some sort of telephone directory access to public/their customers.

If anyone of you knows about some site/feature which provide this information, please post your comment here.

BSNL already has the directory online. BSNL Directory Online has feature where you can search by telephone number or by name. Just click on the link above and select the state you want to search the number for. Once you select the state, you can select district information and search by number or name. Its pretty slick.

MTNL also provides directory services for its metros.

Updates: This is not a directory service. REMEMBER There is no directory services available for Tata Phones. You can not get address/name information from a phone number. That is a privacy issue, and Telephone operators like Tata, Reliance etc. don't release this kind of information to the public. So PLEASE don't put your personal email address

and cellphone numbers here asking the address/name information. This site will not be responsible for the misuse of the information provided by you.

I do want to help you out and if I will get more information about any kind of directory for Tata Phones, I will post it here. Thanks for visiting.

Mobile Web Analytics and Statistics for the iPhone

Clicky Web Analytics now lets you monitor your web site traffic remotely from your iPhone. As the global trend of access to information anywhere anytime continues, Clicky Mobile fits right in. Real-time analytics meets mobile flexibility.

In addition to the iPhone version, Clicky also offers a generic version for other mobile devices. The iPhone version takes advantage of the aesthetic and Javascript abilities. It looks great and feels like an application. Since Clicky Mobile is built off the WebKit platform, it will also work on the new Android phones when they are released, as well as any other mobile browser based on WebKit.

Just like Clicky, the mobile interface is clean and simple. It is more designed for that quick fix on the go, rather than a full substitute for the web site, but in that regard it delivers as promised.

The iPhone version even includes a its own Spy mode, which streams pageviews and other actions LIVE as they are happening on your web site. If you get more than a few thousand visitors per day, you can sit for hours and watch people use your web site live. It's a lot of fun and great to have that feature on the go.

Once you have registered and installed the tracking code on your site, just go to http://m.getclicky.com/ from your mobile device. It will automatically detect which version your mobile device supports and direct you to the right one.

Click here for a bunch more screenshots of the iPhone version in action.
