Opportunities in Home Networking Market

Gone are the days when home networks were primarily confined to IT freaks and technophiles as most families had to compromise because of the affordability level of the computers. But in this age of information, the computers are not only used for e-mail, rather they are extensively used in other fields also like in schools, governmental sectors, instant messaging, downloading internet contents and for enjoying games. Nowadays computers have become part and parcel of almost all families and one computer is not able to satisfy their needs to all extent.

Therefore, in a household with more than one computer, a home network plays a very vital role and in turn becomes a necessity. Moreover the Internet has educed vast changes in the place of work. These changes in turn generate a need for home networks. Not only this, since the Corporate world is constantly and continuously changing and everybody is opting for cost-cutting measures these days and many employers believes that telecommuting practices are clicking, which in turn give rise to the demand for such networking solutions. The demand for home networking products and solutions are also gaining rapid momentum because households containing business is very common thing these days and therefore all will need small-business solutions that work well in a home environment and for that all will need such kinds of solutions.

Mohit Anand, Managing Director, Belkin India, informed that Belkin India offers a complete range of solutions for Home Networking which includes wireless routers, wireless modem routers, wireless USB client adapters, wireless PCI cards for desktops and also home base and Network USB hub. Talking about the market opportunities for such Home networking solutions, he said, The home networking market is a very big market and since broadband penetration is increasing very rapidly in home, the market will continue to grow. Moreover the IDC forecast suggests that the growth will be 50% year on year and we expect this category will become more important in the time to come and therefore the opportunities are really huge.

Mentioning further about how they identify and understand consumers need and design solutions accordingly, he informed that they are designing networking solutions keeping 3 types of customers in mind. These are Basic users- who are having basic needs and simply connecting for the first time, Technology enthusiasts- who like video streaming, stuff like sharing and uploading etc. and the third type are the Power users- who are using the technology over a considerable period of time, handling business using the technology from home etc.

He further informed that areas on which the company is focusing on are home consumers including Sohos and SMEs, and in a big way the focus these days is on Governmental segment because it is growing very fast, educational sectors are also being focused on because lot of colleges, schools and universities are going Wi-Fi these days and providing students with laptops and other standard modes of educational devices and lastly the focus is also on Business service category which includes enterprises with employees strength between 5-20.

On being asked about the benefits of wireless home networking, he said, The main advantage of such networking is mobility i.e. anything could be accessed from anywhere, no maintenance costs like breakage of wire and all, ease to set up and use device etc. Commenting on the future of Home Networking market, he said, The future is certainly very bright and already the market is growing and it is also forecasted by the analysts that by 2013 this market will be around $100 million in India.

In future there will be a lot of penetration in B&C class cities, Tier II and Tier III cities and thus the demand for PCs will increase which in turn will give rise to the demand of internet and broadband and henceforth the market for Home Networking will grow immensely, he told.

Rohan Dholakia, Marketing Head India, 3Com, informed that 3Coms product offering is segregated into three verticals SME, Enterprise and Government. For the home networking segment, 3Com has a diverse portfolio of switches, routers (WAN/Internet) and firewall. Their switches comprise of next-generation and highly affordable Layer 2 managed, unmanageable 10/100 and Gigabit models. Their wireless products offer high-performance, cost-effective and reliable wireless adapters and Cable/DSL or ADSL routers.

Talking further about what motivates them to foray in to providing such solutions, he said, Considering the continuous demand for such products, 3Coms always been geared to develop and design highly competitive solutions. For the home segment 3Coms primary focus is to distinguish itself with a very reliable solution (defect-free), while keeping costs at a minimum.

Mentioning further about how they identify and understand consumers need and design solutions accordingly, he informed that they keep up with the rapidly changing technologies by offering innovative, easy-to-use and reliable home networking products for the deployment of wireless digital homes. These devices are built with the consumer in mind and which not only help simplify usability but also create a premium user experience.

Moreover, nowadays consumers are looking for home networking devices which are easy to setup and use as they may not be familiar with the technical jargon of home networking. Cisco addressed that with a simple, visual software interface that will ease the adoption for users who are new to networking technology. On being asked about the companys aim regarding the home networking solutions, he said, Our aim is to make the devices simple and accessible for anyone to enjoy the wireless home experience and create experiences that help consumers become comfortable with using technology to enrich their lives.

Commenting on the market opportunities and future of home networking market, he said, India has been at the forefront in adopting new wireless technologies, largely fuelled by the rapid growth in broadband penetration. According to TRAI, there would be 20M broadband connections and 40M internet connection by 2010. Moreover, the wireless industry been backed by the Government of India. Hence we have seen the Indian market, gain traction.

In addition, the country is on the threshold of a digital revolution resulting in unprecedented demand for digital content. Consumers are beginning to demand more from their network and this presents a huge opportunity for wireless networking, he told.

Analyzing the above verdicts, it is as clear as a crystal that the Home networking market has an exceptional future in the offing and in coming time this market will be poised very comfortably

Easy IP Check

If you want to check the IP Address of your computer then no need to go to your computer network properties.

Use this if you just want to display your IP address and not the extra information (default gateway / subnet mask)

Simply copy and paste the following into notepad

@echo.
@ipconfig | find "IP Address"
@echo.
@pause

And save as IP.BAT (save to your windows dir if you want to be able to access it anywhere)

Now when you type IP in DOS or when you run the IP.BAT file you will see:

---------------------------

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : x.x.x.x

Press any key to continue . . .

How to clear the BIOS password ?

You can speed up your startup procedures by changing the BIOS with the built-in setup utility. How you run this utility varies from PC to PC, but you typically get to it by pressing the Delete, F1, or F10 keys during startup. You’ll come to a menu with a variety of choices. Here are the choices to make for faster system startups:

Quick Power On Self Test (POST):

When you choose this option, your system runs an abbreviated POST rather than the normal, lengthy one.

Boot Up Floppy Seek:

Disable this option. When it’s enabled, your system spends a few extra seconds looking for your floppy drivea relatively pointless procedure, especially considering how infrequently you use your floppy drive.

Boot Delay:

Some systems let you delay booting after you turn on your PC so that your hard drive gets a chance to start spinning before bootup. Most likely, you don’t need to have this boot delay, so turn it off. If you run into problems, however, you can turn it back on.

How to hide drives on Windows XP or Vista ?

You may need to hide a drive either for security reasons (to ensure that children do not have access to a backup drive, for example) or for practical reasons (if your PC has multiple memory card readers never used). Here's how to do so, under XP and Vista.

A command in the registry will tell Windows Explorer not to display some readers. Technically, the system uses a binary value of 32 bits where each bit corresponds to a reader. Bit 0 is the drive A, bit 1 in drive B, etc.. When this bit is "1" the player is hidden, otherwise it is visible.
  • Go to Start, then Run and then type regedit.
  • Deploy the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/Explorer"
  • If the DWORD (32 bit) named NoDrives does not exist, start by creating (click the right mouse button and select New then Value DWORD).
  • Double-click NoDrives to amend this item, select Base Decimal and enter into the data field the decimal value of the player to hide (e.g. 512 for the drive J: ). If you hide multiple drives, take their different decimal values and add them.

Disable USB storage

This trick can remove the automatic recognition when you insert a USB storage device like a USB flash drive or external hard drive. This allows for example to prevent anyone from recovering data on a machine with a USB support.
  • When you connect a USB stick for the first time on a computer, Windows will then detect and install the new device automatically.

  • The new device will be visible in Windows Explorer.

  • During the next insertion of the key, it will be directly detected. There is a way to prevent this, making detection device inactive.

  • Open regedit (Start, Run ... and then type regedit)

  • Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ UsbStor

  • In the right pane, change the Start value in giving it a value of 4 in hexadecimal (the default is 3).

  • If your device is already connected, it will be necessary to unplug it first so that it is disabled. Thereafter, the key will no longer be recognized at its inclusion.

  • If you wish to activate the USB devices, you must put the Start value to 3.

Uninstall Programs That Are Not Appeared in Add or Remove Programs List

Installing a program could be easy and fast. However, when come to uninstalling a program especially for the one which always gives you lot of problems, it may take you some hassle when the program doesn’t appear in add or remove program or no uninstall tool being provided. How To Enable Automatic Logon / Login Into Windows XP

Like Windows Vista which has an user interface to configure automatic logon to skip entering password and directly boot up to desktop, Windows XP also have such convenient feature, which works for non-domain connected PC, and can be used to automate the log on process so that system can startup and login automatically.

Normally Windows XP will automatically log into desktop console if there is only one single user on defined or created in the system. However, sometimes, user may need to create more than one user accounts for various applications usage, such as for FTP account, .NET Framework, web server, VMWare 2.0 web console etc., and with the existence of additional accounts, Windows XP will display Welcome Screen or Ctrl-Alt-Del dialog box to allow user to select an user account to logon. Setting the auto login feature will start computer and use preset account to automatically log on.

To set Windows XP to auto logon, follow procedure below. Note that once the computer is configured for automatic login, anyone who can physically gain access to the computer can also gain access to everything that is on the computer, including any network or networks that the computer is connected to. Besides, the password to login is stored in plain text format in the registry, which readable by anyone who can access the console, or remotely by Authenticated Users group. So, auto login feature is convenient, but not entirely secure.
  • Click Start, and then click Run.
  • In the “Open” box, type control userpasswords2, and then click OK.
  • Clear the check box for Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer, and then click Apply.

An “Automatically Log On” window will appear. In the dialog box, type the password for Administrator in the Password box, and then retype the password in the Confirm Password box.

Normally, the User Name field will auto fill with “Administrator”, the default super user account in Windows XP that does not come with any password (and normally use as a backdoor hack access to XP system). If you wish, you can change the user name to another user account.
  • Click OK to close the “Automatically Log On” window, and then click OK to close the “User Accounts” window.

Move from Windows to Linux

A suggestive guide on how to move from Windows to Linux. Get a taste of Linux without disrupting your Windows installation.
  • Choose a Linux Distro. Research is key. Look into what distribution of GNU/Linux would be best for you. Everyone is different, and all Linux distributions are different, but there will probably be one (or two) that appeals to the most. If you're new to the operating system, it's probably best to go for something PCLinuxOS, Mandriva or Ubuntu - these distributions of Linux are aimed at inexperienced users and will help you along the way. The Ubuntu distribution will send you a set of CDs free of charge, there are other sites on the internet which charge a small fee for postage.

  • Try the "Live CD" versions first, assuming your computer will boot from the CD drive; most will. Most distributions offer Live CD ISOs on their website, which you can burn to CD. A Live CD means that Linux will run entirely from a CD and will not touch your Windows installation - this allows you to test out some of the functionality Linux offers without wiping your existing Windows install.

  • Use Linux applications that have been ported over to Windows. Fine example are Inkscape and the GIMP. Using these will get you used to the kind of applications available on Linux. Using open source applications will be a real boost when you actually switch over, as it will be relatively painless for, say, an XChat user to use XChat on his new system, rather than a mIRC (Or other Windows-only IRC client) user having to learn an entirely new program.

  • Back up your important data before you do anything else. If you make a mistake while installing Linux, it's possible you'll have to format your hard drive to put things right. In which case, you will lose all data on it. It is very important you back up if you need to.

  • Get hold of a Linux install CD - when you boot from this, it will take you through the steps required to install Linux. Some distributions, like Ubuntu, actually install from the Live CD, so you do not need to download an additional CD image.

  • Partition your hard drive into two partitions, one containing your existing Windows install, the other containing the Linux installation. Under Windows, this can be easily done with various partitioning tools (Partition Magic, Paragon Partition Manager and others) preserving both Windows installation and existing data. Note that Windows Vista comes with a partition tool.

  • Choose which operating system to boot into when once the Linux installation has finished. This is called dual-booting. It is wise to do this before completely converting to Linux to give you something to fall back on if something goes wrong.

  • Get comfortable with Linux. As time goes on you will find you need to boot into Windows less and less. Using Linux is a learning experience, make sure you make the most of the "community" help which is available from most distributions of Linux. There is usually a wide community which you can ask questions and there will be people more than willing to help you out with any problems you've got. Make sure you use Google and the "search" functions on community websites because people may get irate at answering the same questions all the time in forums and on irc. Visit your distribution's support page or FAQ.

  • Wipe your Windows partition (devote your entire hard disk to Linux) once you're comfortable with Linux. You'll probably never look back!

Play Music from CD-ROM without Computer

Here is a trick which will play CD in the CD-ROM without having a computer. This will work for the older CD-ROM which had 3.5mm Audio out Jack and can play only Audio CD [some support mp3 but no other format] [Best works with Creative 52X Multimedia CD-ROM also had an Infra-Red Remote and lots of buttons for play/pause, stop, etc].
You will need :
  • A CD-ROM with Audio Out 3.5mm jack.
  • A SMPS [Old AT SMPS which had a power switch to on the supply unlike ATX which needs motherboard to power on].
  • A power cable to power your SMPS.

How to do:
  • Connect the CD-ROM with SMPS.
  • Connect your speaker to the Audio jack of the CD-ROM or connect an amplifier for Bigger speaker, power it up, insert an audio CD.
  • Rock On!!

Why Windows does not recognizes 4GB of RAM installed?

Windows XP or Vista 32-bit edition can not use 4 GB, there is nothing to do, it is a mathematical limit.

32-bit system can address:
2 power 32 = 4.3 GB addresses
... As it needs to send something other than the RAM (resources motherboard, expansion cards, including the graphics card), it remains only about 2.8 to 3.3 GB of RAM addressable following configuration PC.
In the end only 2.75 to 3.5 GB of memory is actually usable, and this, by the very design of the x86 memory architecture.
To note that the exact amount of memory that Windows XP recovery depends on the chipset and BIOS on the motherboard.
This difference between the amount of physical memory installed and the amount available under Windows due to the presence of an area high in the memory.
Located just below the 4 GB, which is stored the memory used by the various devices PCI expansion, something imposed by the x86 architecture.
Therefore, the onboard video memory for graphics cards has just cut, in part, the total amount of memory available ...

It is therefore not a breakdown or a bad setting in your PC

I draw your attention to the last sentence, the system memory, graphics will be deducted from the RAM installed:
If you have a graphics card with 2 GB of memory, or CrossFire 1GB card, Windows will not see more than 2.8 GB addressable, with a 3-way SLI GTX 280 of the value of memory for Windows falls 2.5 GB

What can we do?

There is a trick, the PAE (Physical Address Extension), to address the memory of 36-bit OS with a 32-bit, but it does not, unfortunately, in practice, since Microsoft has disabled this function for reasons of compatibility drivers and applications general public:

"... even when the parameter PAE is enabled, the amount of memory available in Windows is still less than 4 GB with the same 32-bit edition of Windows Vista"

"to avoid potential compatibility problems of pilots, 32-bit versions of Windows Vista limit the total available memory to 3.12 GB ..

If a computer has many devices installed, available memory may be reduced to 3 GB or less. However, the maximum memory available in 32-bit versions of Windows Vista is typically 3.12 GB "

On a more professional system closed, you do not need to ensure compatibility of thousands of drivers, it can activate an EAP or something equivalent.

Conclusion

There is no way to use more than 3GB of RAM on a Windows 32-bit. The solution to use 4GB or more on a PC general public is to switch to 64-bit Windows, taking care that all drivers and applications do not yet exist in 64-bit ...

Show Packet Errors in your Network LAN Connection Status

By default, when it displays the connection status to the LAN in network connections, the number of network errors is not displayed. Microsoft has voluntarily removed this information because you receive this number could mislead the average user. However, for advanced users, this information may be particularly important to analyze or detect a network problem.

Start the registry

Click on "start", "Run ..." then type "regedit" and click on "OK"

Go to the key:
Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Network \ Connections \ StatMon
Perhaps the key named "StatMon" does not exist in this case you have to create it.

On the right, create a DWORD value named "
ShowLanErrors" and put "1" as data.

Now when you view the status of the LAN connection you will have the number of errors that appear.

How to Reinstall System Restore

Warning: Reinstalling System Restore will delete all existing restore points.

Go to Start - Run and type %Windir%\INF then press enter.

Find the sr.inf file, right click on it and select Install.

Or simply type or paste the following command into the Start - Run box and press enter.
  • rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf

If the Files Needed dialog box appears, click Browse and point to one of these locations:
  • The i386 folder on the Windows XP CD.
  • The i386 folder on the hard drive, if it exists.
  • The C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder if the systems has been updated to Service Pack 2.
  • The retail version of Windows XP (SP2) CD contains the latest version of the files needed also.
  • The SP2 CD, (or the SP2 file DOWNLOADED from Microsoft) click HERE.

If after reinstalling System Restore this error message is received, “System restore was unable to start due to a missing Framedyn.dll. Please reinstall the application to fix this problem.” click HERE.

When the reinstall is complete you will receive this message:
"You must restart your computer before the new settings will take effect.
Do you want to restart your computer now?"
At this point click YES.

Reinstalling System Restore from the Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD or downloaded files
  • Insert the SP-2 CD into the computer
  • When the MS Windows XP Service Pack 2 appears, click Continue
  • Click Install now on the next window

  • The i386 folder will be located in the directory previously noted.
  • Move the i386 folder to a safe place. The i386 folder can also be burnt to a CD for safe keeping.
  • On the “Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup Wizard above, click Cancel to close the wizard.
  • Follow the instructions above to reinstall System Restore and when asked for the location of the files needed to complete the install browse to the i386 folder just saved.

  • It may be necessary to browse back to the i386 folder to complete the reinstall.

Remove outdated DLL files from your system

When uninstalling a program you are sometimes asked whether a
certain DLL file can be deleted. Whether this DLL file is still needed, check with a look in the registry.
  • Start Registry Editor from Start - Run ... " (WIN + ), followed by the command regedit. Then click "OK" or press the button .
  • Navigate to the key
  • "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ SharedDLLs".
  • In the right pane you will see the DLL files. Look in the column "value" of the digit in brackets. This value indicates, as many of these DLL files are required.
  • If the DLL has the value "0", you can do so in Windows Explorer into the trash.
  • Exit the Registry Editor by clicking the Close button.

How to Cool your Laptop

he laptop sees its components compressed in a tiny box and plastic. Installed on your clothes, your bed, it will quickly heat up.
There are methods to cool laptops, but I find unsavory. The fans do nothing and the system is more efficient in most cases the elevation of the computer. Once a little high, air will be evacuated without obstacles and the evacuation will be faster.
We remember all laptops exploding causing injury. Those days are behind us, but who knows, keep your laptop cool and your knees intact.

Radiators heat to bare

I would like to draw your attention to this new trend, radiators heat naked. They offer very good performance but a montage too harsh or too tight can break. Be careful!

Details needed

As elsewhere, the details are often important. I speak here of the thermal paste and many other things ;-)

The thermal paste

The thermal paste, which is located within the heart (GPU, CPU) is used to establish contact between the radiator and the surface of the heart so as not to leave empty, because the air is very bad driver. We must apply the right dose, a hazelnut. No micro-hazelnut, hazelnut not high plutonium, a classic hazelnut. It should then (with a rigid card for example) spread the paste over the surface of the heart so that the contact is total.
The thermal paste has a very long life (usually more than 2 years), there is no need to change every month!
As for thermal pads, adhesive supposedly small conductors of heat, I advise you to switch to the dough as soon as you can, you will get several degrees.

Cleanliness

Yes, the air drawn in by your computer is full of dust and it will be quick to get stuck in the radiators or fan blades. Cleaning every month is a good idea if you often have your PC switched on. The cleaning will be a bomb with dry air and a slightly damp cloth or your breath and a rag. Attention to the ideas of vacuum cleaning, a screw is lost very quickly!

The different materials of the radiator

As you know, all metals are more or less drivers! Here is a list of more or less driver:
  • Silver (429 W / (mK))
  • Copper (401 W / (mK))
  • Or (317 W / (mK))
  • Aluminum (237 W / (mK))
  • Zinc (116 W / (mK))
  • Nickel (90.7 W / (mK))

You can get an idea of the mediocrity of aluminum. Of course, we must take these results with tweezers, the purity of the metal in question playing heavily on the conductivity.
